No7 Radiance Boosting Hot Cloth Cleanser

Over the winter my skin became a little drier and a lot duller than usual. I found that the cleansers I were using weren’t helping matters so I went off in search of a cleanser which would soothe rather than strip my skin and an awful lot of people seem to really rate this offering from No7. Armed with a £5 voucher of temptation I paid £5 for this (normally £10 obviously) which I don’t think is a bad price for a whopping 200ml of product!

The idea is that you massage this into dry skin, wet the muslin cloth with hot water and use it to massage away your makeup whilst exfoliating all those nasty dull dead skin cells away too. Whilst I think it’s great that they include a muslin cloth I personally found it to be a bit scratchy and promptly binned it. Instead I use normal face cloths (I have about 20 and think they are the unsung heroes of the makeup world) which are more gentle but still do a great job.

The packaging is just fab. It looks sleek and kind of clinical and the pump is hygienic. The cleanser itself is very thick and certainly feels luxurious as you massage it into the skin. The fragrance is faint, a sort of herby cucumber mix which I barely notice. I do think this does a good job of removing my face makeup (you do need a separate remover for your eyes though) and crucially it does it without leaving my skin feeling dry and tight.

Do I have a glowing, radiant face? Er no. But my skin feels a lot nicer than it did. And as spring has sprung it’s still playing nicely with my skin despite it not being as dry as it was over the winter. Whilst I wouldn’t pay the £10 for it, I just don’t see the need to when the £5 vouchers appear so often, I would happily buy this again! X

Obsessed with Circus

For some reason I’ve been reaching for the Sleek Circus palette over and over again lately. It’s just so bright and fun! Despite the mad colours I’ve been able to create some darker, more wearable looks too.

Or I’ve just gone bat shit crazy with colour!

That’s 17 Mirror Shine lipstick in Peace on the lips, Estee Lauder Peach Nuance blush, NYX Jumbo eye pencil in Milk, Barry M Water Proof Eyeliner in Black, Rimmel Scandeleyes mascara and finally a very dried up Sleek Ink Pot gel liner. I’m blaming it being dried out for my fudged up liner...

What have you been wearing lately? I feel a pastel phase coming on next... x

Goodbyes

It’s that time of the month again where I take a look at all of the products I’m finished recently and give my verdict on whether or not I think they are worthy of a repurchase. First up, I’ve actually finished some makeup!

See that gloriously empty pan there? That was the Sleek Crème to Powder foundation. I really did not get on with this. I found the texture odd, it was difficult to get an even application and it did not last well on my skin. Needless to say I won’t buy this particular foundation again.

Garnier Anti Dark Circles Roll On. On the one hand I really like the look of this but the alcohol in it made my eyes water and dried my skin out a little. For this reason I won’t buy it again.

My beloved Collection 2000 Love Your Lips Gloss is gone! I can’t scrape anything else out of the tube. These are fab little glosses. Really moisturising and they have SPF. I already have some other shades on the go.

The Kiehls Midnight Recovery Concentrate was actually a fab product and one I wouldn’t definitely recommend for parched winter skin. I don’t think I’d need anything this hard core over the summer but maybe next winter I will indulge.

More Botanics Hand Cream and ELF face wipes. I always have these two on the go and I have backups. The Kiehls Ultra Facial Cream was nice too but I’ve had cheaper moisturisers produce similar results.

The ELF Blot Sheets appear every month too so no surprise there. The tiny sample of Laughter Nuit perfume came with a Space NK order and I loved it. I’m definitely tempted by the full bottle. I finally defeated my Vaseline Rosy Lips. Those tins take literally months to go away! The Cherry Cola lip smacker if from Primark, these are actually fab little lip balms and I have a few more stashed away.

And finally we come to two products that I just do not recommend. The Mark Hill Heat Protection spray stank like vodka and did nothing for my hair. The Boy Shop Satsuma Body Polish had an overpowering scent that could be a little sickly (each to their own though) and I didn’t find it scrubby enough at all. I won’t be buying that again!

Vichy Dermablend Corrective Foundation

This foundation has been my friend and my foe in equal measure lately. You might remember the chair debacle (long story short my face connected with chair, bruising ensued) and nothing helped cover it as well as this. This foundation makes Revlon Color Stay look like a tinted moisturiser, the coverage is that high. I approve of the SPF 20 (you will NEVER find me in front of a camera flash so flash back isn’t an issue for me) and I love the practical squeezey tube.

I have the lightest shade, 15 Opal. In the swatch it does look nice and pale if not a little pink toned. It looks fine when I apply it and has a flattering satin finish which does diffuse imperfections very well. Sadly on my skin this oxidises to an alarming degree. It becomes too dark and too orange very quickly. The thick coverage means that the only way to combat this is to apply it all down my neck and collar bones so there is no tide line otherwise the shade discrepancy is very obvious. The limited shade range is a real shame!

As for how the foundation performs it’s not ideal for me. I wouldn’t call this a long lasting foundation (but then most don’t last long on my oily nose). If I blot and powder like my life depends on it I can get 8 hours of wear but be warned that this can look very obviously patchy as it fades.

Where this foundation excels for me is as a concealer. Its coverage is excellent, you can apply layer and layer and it never cakes up. The satin finish means that it doesn’t look crusty or dry on blemishes or slightly crepey under eye skin.

So there we have it. I wouldn’t have gotten through the work week without people asking me if I’d been beaten up without this and I certainly think this is an excellent foundation to have in my collection in case of furniture related emergencies. Would I wear it as an everyday foundation? No. It’s a little bit too much work for that. I’d be far more likely to use it mixed with a moisturiser or on its own as a concealer. At £15.50 I think it’s very reasonably priced and I don’t know of any other brand on the UK high street that offers this kind of camouflage coverage! X

Wish List

I’ve been playing a bit of fantasy shopping basket of late. There are quite a few releases which have caught my eye and I will no doubt pick a few of these up when my no buy ends. In the mean time I just have to lust after them from afar...

MUA BB Cream (actually all of the UK high street BB offerings inc 17, No7 etc) I just want to try it and at £4 it would be rude not to!

Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Concealer. Considerably more expensive than any concealer I currently own but I’ve been told this lasts really well even on oily bits.
Geurlain Sun In The City. Isn’t it just beautiful? Beautiful enough to justify the £43 price tag? Could well be actually.

Finally everything from the Illamasqua Human Fundamentalism collection. I adore this collection but if I have to only pick one thing it would be the Neutral Palette (£30).

What have you been lusting after lately?

Eve Lom Hand Cream

I haven’t heard much about Eve Lom but I like their style. Hand Cream – an excellent bit of product naming. No I’m not being sarcastic, regular readers will know that I loathe overly complicated product names. Call a spade a spade (and a hand cream a hand cream). This particular tube is a sample from a Space NK order however the full sized 50ml tube looks the same (but bigger... obviously). It’s a sleek plain white with gold lettering. Apologies for the stock photo but I appear to have deleted this picture I took.

The cream itself is perfectly functional. It’s rich enough to be moisturising but not so rich that it’s greasy. The SPF 10 is a nice inclusion. It sinks relatively quickly. All good yes?

Well not for me I’m afraid. Some people will slap me for this but you know The Body Shop Hemp hand cream? Yeah it makes me want to vomit. To me it smells like mouldy fruit. I cannot use it and will leave the room if someone else near me uses it. This isn’t as bad but it has that slight hemp type of smell lingering in it. I’ve been able to use it up but purely based on the scent I would never buy it again. If you happen to love those kinds of scents and fancy something a little less strong this might be a nice option for you.

There is no point denying that I feel that £22 is a hell of a lot of money for a hand cream, especially when you go through them at the rate that I do. But for me the price doesn’t come into it in this case. it could cost 20p and the fragrance would put me off. I’m curious, can any of you think of an example of a perfectly good product that has been spoilt by a pongy scent? Lancôme Hypnose Drama is one that springs to mind for me x

Sample Sunday – Dr. Brandt Lines No More (For Lips)

I received this with a Space NK order and was intrigued. This claims to be an ‘Ultra conditioning lip line filler, volumizer and plumper’. I naturally have quite deep lines in my lips. It’s never bothered me but I was curious to see if this would actually do anything to improve them.

The product is a thick white cream which smells and tastes a little bit like orange sherbet (which always makes me think of Austin Powers...). There is the familiar sting/ tingle that you get with most lip plumping products. It’s not uncomfortable but it is there. Whilst this is moisturising initially I personally don’t think it’s a replacement for a lip balm for me as my lips started to feel dry again pretty quickly after using it.

As for reducing the depth of my lip lines yes it does. Not permanently obviously but after use my lips do look a little plumper and smoother. I think where this product would be useful would be as a primer. If you applied it at the start of applying your makeup then by the time you apply you lip products you would find yourself with a smoother canvas with none of the lip that traditional balms give.

If it sounds like your kind of product the full sized 7.5ml tube costs £25 from Space NK.

Benefit Thrrrob

Ah Benefit, I love the boxed powders but I loathe the price. So of course when my lovely friend Christina gave me a gift voucher for Christmas I jumped at the chance to add Thrrob to my slowly growing collection of Boxed Powders guilt free. Thrrrob is a dusty pale pink which is mostly matte as the very subtle silver shimmer evident in the pan doesn’t seem to transfer to the skin.

The box is cute with a lace up design on the front. I don’t need to rant again about how impractical the cardboard packaging is. When I got it home my first thought was how similar I thought it might be to NYX Angel but upon closer inspection Thrrrob is actually paler!

Now we all know I normally fit foundation shades such as ‘corpse’ or ‘A4 paper’ so if I have to pack on a colour to get it to show up then this should set alarm bells ringing. This is definitely not going to be a winner for darker skin tones. I have to build this up a lot to get the “turned on flush” promised by the box. Once it’ on though it does look very pretty. The slightly dusty quality stops it being a dolly pink. It is subtle but I like it. I think it might work even better if it is paired with a similar toned cream blush but sadly I don’t own one to try it.

The Benefit Boxed Powders are £23.50. Hervana is next on my list to acquire! x

Space NK Eyeliner Brush

In the Space NK sale I spotted this brush reduced from £14 to £7 (as I write this it is still on the website at this price) and given that I don’t have any other eyeliner brushes in this style in the basket it went.

It is a square, flat synthetic brush. The handle is relatively short and squat, the bristles are extremely firm and springy but not scratchy at all. It feels very light weight but it is well made and has withstood multiple washes and uses with a variety of liners without losing shape or shedding a single hair.

The shape of the brush allows you to press in liner right at the root of the lashes allowing for a subtle but defined look. This certainly isn’t a brush I would use for any winged liner look but for every day definition it works well. The fact that it is synthetic means it’s great from cream/ gel liners but it doesn’t work as well with powder product. I actually bought this thinking I would use it with my Laura Mercier cake liner but it just doesn’t work brilliantly with it.

Over all I like but don’t love this brush. I think it’s just a personal preference though, that shape isn’t my favourite style of liner brush but nothing ventured nothing gained and at least I’ve tried it now. And it is an excellent price for a good quality brush! X

Lancôme Juicy Tube in 19 Lychee

These lip glosses are something of a cult classic. Their iconic squeezey tube and sugary scent are synonymous with teenage girls taking their first steps into high end cosmetics. Bizarrely the only place I ever spot them now is in gift sets in airport duty frees. I haven’t ever tried these until I got this mini one in the Selfridges advent calendar (the gift that keeps on giving, I’m going to be reviewing these products for the rest of the year!)

This particular shade is a strawberry pink with lovely iridescent glitters. The glitter lasts longer than the gloss so with repeated applications it builds up and becomes more glittery throughout the day. Eventually it becomes more than a little gritty. The colour is pretty sheer so you really are just getting shine and sparkle from this.

The texture I do not like. I don’t usually mind tacky lip gloss as it means it’s going to last more than 5 minutes on my lips but this is positively sticky. It isn’t particularly comfortable to wear. The stickiness, gritty texture and the lack of any real moisturising properties mean that I’m not reaching for this often. At £14.50 per tube I was expecting a little better to be honest but I don’t quite get the appeal. If I’m missing something here please do let me know! x

Monu Line Smoothing Skin Perfector

Way back when in the mists of time I got this in a Glossy Box. This is a full sized 50ml sample (retailing for £16.25). It’s managed to confuse the heck out of me. On the tube it says use ‘every morning after cleansing and toning. Provides a smooth base for makeup’. Therefore I assumed this was a primer. Expect on the Glossy Box website it says use morning and evening... so moisturiser? Confused!! Eventually I decided that on me it works as a primer so that’s what I’m using it as. If it looks like a primer, acts like a primer and sounds like it should be a primer then it probably is one but do let me know your thoughts on this.

You get a huge 50ml of product in a handy squeezey tube. This will last FOREVER. You don’t need much but 50ml is more than you get in most foundations so I won’t be running out of this any time soon!

The formula itself is somewhat similar to the Witch Anti Blemish primer. It’s more of a lotion consistency than some of my more mattifying primers. It spreads easily over the skin but the trick is to apply it, go make another coffee (or 2) then come back to it. After a couple of minutes it sets to a satin finish, it feels quite velvety on the skin. It isn’t the poly filler for pores that Benefit Porfessional is but it does provide a lovely smooth base which helps the application of foundation over the top of it. I personally don’t find it particularly hydrating but I can see how it would work for drier skin by being more forgiving on flaky bits than some for matte look primers can be.

It doesn’t do a huge amount for oil control but I tend to use a mattifying gel on my nose anyway. On my non greasy bits it does a good job of improving the application and look of my foundation. I don’t really have any lines to test the ‘line smoothing’ claims on but as a basic primer I do like it. And for once I’m not complaining about the price either, £16.25 seems really quite reasonable to me for this amount of product.

The only issue I have with it is a fairly minor one. I don’t like the smell. It’s a kind of earthy, herbal scent and it’s just not my cup of tea. I can live with it as it isn’t too strong and it doesn’t linger thankfully.

Did you get this in a Glossy Box too? What were your thoughts? I curious to hear hwo other people have been using this x

Collection 2000 Coloured Lengthening Mascara (In Blue!)

I wanted to get this review up ASAP as word on the grape vine is that Collection 2000 will soon be rebranding so I’m not sure if this mascara will still be around. I hope it will be because I freaking love it!

I know what you’re thinking, blue mascara? Really? Yes. I love coloured mascara. It looks pretty subtle on my black lashes unless I’m in direct sunlight (or in front of a camera flash) but the colour is strong enough to have an impact on your look. Anyway the colour doesn’t matter too much as you can buy this in black too. This is just an all round great mascara for me!

We will start with the wand. It’s a dense bristled affair which is importantly not too big. I’ve had it with these huge mascara wands that poke you in the eye and smear mascara all the way up my hooded lids. This is just right. Not too big but not so small as to be fiddly. Perfect!

The formula is very dry which makes it excellent at holding a curl. It build length nicely too although girls who like a volumising mascara (I usually don’t) may want to layer this over something else as it doesn’t provide much in the way of volume.

The packaging is cute too. It looks and feels more expensive than it’s £2.99 price tag. Over all this is one of the best mascaras for my short, fat, straight lashes that I’ve tried in a long time and it also happens to be one of the cheapest. Win! X

Random Cosmetic Orientated Ramblings.

I thought it might be interesting (or not, whatever) to share a few of my cosmetic quirks and (more interestingly) to see if you have any yourselves to post in the comments. So here we go, 5 strange cosmetic facts about me:

1.       I apply my makeup in a very set order (it appeals to my obsessive compulsive tendencies). When applying my foundation I start with my nose, then my right cheek, chin, left cheek, forehead and finally blend down my neck. I NEVER deviate from this. Mad? Yes. But I’m told that’s part of my charm *ahem*.

2.       In the same vein I also do my eye makeup in an odd order. Eyeshadow primer goes on first but then I have to do my brows before I do my actual eye makeup. Because I just do ok?!

3.       I have never smiled to do my blush. I just never have. It didn’t occur to me to, I can see where my cheek bones are! But when I started reading blogs/ watching youtube everyone said you should. Now of course people say you shouldn’t as it drags your cheek down. Whatever, I’ve never seen the point.

4.       I do not like the corpse lips look. I just don’t. I like nudes, just not concealer “where does my face end and my lips begin” nudes. I don’t think it looks good. (Please don’t hate me if it’s your favourite look... Each to their own etc).

5.       I didn’t really start wearing makeup until I was in my 20’s. I’m making up for lost time now!!

So come on then, don’t be shy. What odd cosmetic related oddities do you have to share?

Yves Saint Laurent Crayon Yeux Waterproof Eyeliner

I’m not generally a fan of waterproof makeup. I just don’t personally feel the need for it. Yes I live in Glasgow and yes it rains pretty much constantly but I have an umbrella... the main thing that makes me wary of it is that at the end of a long day I don’t want to have to fight with my makeup to get it off my face. On the other hand if a product claims to be waterproof then I expect that it will be otherwise that’s just misleading. So it’s a positive and a negative then that I do not find this pencil to be at all waterproof.

It is lovely to look at, the black and gold looks expensive (it is expensive so it should look it!) and the cap is sturdy and well made. The pencil is soft but not as soft as the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On liners. It sharpens well without crumbling or breaking. The colour is nice and dark, at least as dark as MAC Feline and Urban Decay Zero. It transfers well onto the waterline which is where I typically wear pencil liners.

On the waterline it lasts about 4 hours so just the same as Urban Decay on me. On the upper lashline it does stay put all day with minimal smudging. But waterproof? No. I left that swatch there to set for a good half hour but it still rubbed off with very little effort. It removes just as easily as any other liner I own and if my eyes are watery for whatever reason it will start to smudge on my eyes. It’s by no means overly smudgy and I am personally happy with the wear but I certainly don’t consider it to be waterproof so if waterproof is what you’re looking for I’d carry on looking.

So with all that said and done what we have here is a good, medium length wearing average black eyeliner pencil. I like it about the same as I do the Urban Decay pencils although I might actually prefer this one a little more for the upper lashline as the UD can occasionally transfer up my hooded lids. The one down side for me? It’s £19 for the full sized pencil (this one is a mini). I do think you get the quality you would expect for the money but perhaps there are equally as good liners out there for a little less... x
*This product came in my Selfridges Advent Calendar which I bought myself*

Some faves, some fails and a meh.

It’s been ages since I did a favourites type of post. I just don’t tend to develop out right favourites but I’ve developed some fairly strong opinions on a few things recently so here we go!

WIN - L’Oreal Telescopic Waterproof Mascara. I’ve only had this for a day so excuse the stock photo. The last couple of weeks have been an absolute shit storm and my frayed nerves mean a waterproof mascara is definitely in order. I just applied this and IT’S FREAKING AWESOME. My lashes are almost touching my brows. I will have to wait and see if it’s waterproof enough though.

FAIL – Me. Only I could manage to be stone cold sober, sitting on my own bed and manage to fall off and injure myself. Don’t ask me how but I’ve managed to smack my face of a wooden chair leaving myself black and blue.
cat
see more Lolcats and funny pictures, and check out our Socially Awkward Penguin lolz!

WIN – Vichy Dermablend Corrective Foundation. This doesn’t muck about, it is a full coverage foundation. Granted the bruising on my chin is bad enough to require several layers but this builds well and is the only thing making me look like I haven’t been in a fight and lost.

FAIL – Rimmel Scandaleyes mascara. The mascara itself is fine but the wand is roughly the size of my face. It’s too big (ooh er) which makes it a pain to use. So I don’t.

WIN – The Balm Hot Mama Blush. I’ve been wearing this a lot lately. The peachy colour is very wearable on me and the shimmer gives it enough dimension to not have to bother with highlighter. It’s a throw on and go type of product.

FAIL – Oh look, me again! Muppet here decided in a moment of madness to get her ear lobes pierced again. What’s that you say? Hello Kitty studs?! Don’t mind if I do! Seemed like a great idea at the time until I realised the next day that I am a grown arsed woman and now need to wear these freaking studs for a full 6 weeks to work etc before I can take them out. And the piercings aren’t symmetrical. And I don’t even really like Hello Kitty.

MEH – I’m sorry I’ve tried it every which way but I’m still not loving the Laura Mercier Caviar Cake Liner. It’s working a little better for me now but it’s still more effort to me than the results are worth. Le sigh.

What have you been loving and loathing of late?

Sample Sunday – Kiehls Ultimate Strength Hand Salve

Are you bored of Kiehls yet? Fear not. This is the final sample from them that I got in that Selfridges calendar that I know you’re sick of me harping on about now. I will keep it brief. I loved this.

I’m not going to deny that it’s expensive for a hand cream. A 150ml tube is £19 so it’s a treat rather than a hand bag staple. All I will say is that this does everything I want a hand cream to do. It’s thick and moisturising without being greasy. Fair enough, plenty of hand creams are. I really just adore this because of the smell. It smells of menthol and eucalyptus, a bit like vicks vapour rub, and I LOVE IT. It’s one of my favourite fragrances.

Ok so will I actually buy the full size? Honestly probably not. I go through a tube of hand cream every 3 weeks or so and just can’t justify the cost. But every time I go past the counter I will probably sniff it (freak).

I’m curious. Many of us are happy to splash out on high end skin care and cosmetics. But hand cream? Really? I mean I use a lot of it... What are your thoughts? x
