Battle of the dry shampoos (a comparison)

Dry shampoo is my new bestie. I’ve been road testing a selection over the last few weeks and want to share my thoughts. The contenders are; Boots Expert Dry Shampoo, Batiste Coloured Dry Shampoo ( Brunette), Batiste original, TRESemmé Instant Refresh dry shampoo and Umberto Giannini Morning After dry shampoo.

Here are a few basics:
Brand
Cost
Amount
Scary white roots?
Scent?
TRESemmé
£4.38
200ml
Yes but they brush out easily
Quite fresh, like the shampoo hairdressers always use. Not too overpowering.
Umberto Giannini
£5.61
200ml
Not unless you spray too much
Quite faint and fades quickly.
Batiste Original
£2.35
150ml
Worst white roots of the bunch.
Really quite strong. DO NOT LIKE (personal opinion)
Batiste Brunette
£3.05
150ml
Not unless you spray a lot and brushes out easily.
Much less strong than the original.
Boots own brand
£2.03
200ml
Not really.
Quite faint and fades relatively quickly.

Umberto Giannini – Where to begin? This was the biggest let down of the bunch, not least because it is the most expensive! It did a fab job of dealing with greasy roots. The smell didn’t bother me and I wasn’t left looking like I needed any greys covering. Unfortunately I got to use this 3 times before it died. Now I don’t use a lot per use, I think the can leaked (in fact I’m sure it did because it was all sticky... ew). The others have lasted me many more uses and show no signs of running out yet. What a waste!

TRESemmé – Even though I don’t think this keeps the grease at bay for as long as the Batiste does I still prefer it due to the subtler scent. This gives me less build up of product in my hair too. The key with this really is to spray it in (shaking between sprays) and leave it for a few minutes. It really does need time to dry as it goes on quite wet. Then massage it in and brush out.

Batiste original – If I’m honest I think this does to the best job at removing grease however the big old white patches (the toughest to brush out of the lot) and the overpowering scent mean I probably won’t repurchase this.

Batiste Brunette – All of the effectiveness of the original but none of the drawbacks. I like to alternate between this and the TRESemmé as this does leave more of a build up.

Boots own brand – Somewhat similar in consistency to the TRESemmé but less effective. For slightly greasey hair it’s fine but if your hair is starting to get quite bad this doesn’t cut it. To be honest none of these are exactly breaking the bank so I don’t think it’s worth saving a few pennies on this for a product that doesn’t cut it when the going gets tough.

Now of course people may not agree with me as every ones hair is different (just like skin care works well for some people and not for others). These are just my opinions on how the products worked on my hair. Have you tried any of these? Which do you prefer? Or do you have another brand that you swear by? Enquiring minds want to know!

*I bought all of these myself... judge me at will*

  1. I noticed I'm running out of Batiste this morning so this post was perfect timing for me! Think I'll try the TRESemme one next. I like most of the Batiste scents esp Tropical which I'm using right now, but even original is OK.

  2. I use Tresseme, but recently tried Batiste. And I also had no idea that there were so many dry shampoos out there!!! This is a very nice post, thank you! :)

So far I agree that Batiste is better, and I'm not bothered by the smell... but I might be using one other than Original (I got whole bunch of travel size to try). Also, I have fairly light hair so scary white roots brush out pretty easily for me :)

  3. I may have to try the Tresemme one after reading your post. I hate the original batiste too! The smell, the white powder, everything! I like the brunette one and I alternate between that and the umberto gianni one. I actually love it but it is a bit pricey. That's a shame that you got a bad one! xxx

  4. I must have been living under a rock, but until a few weeks ago I hadn't really heard of dry shampoo (I always thought it was a powder, not spray). I picked up 2 Batiste ones (original and brunette) just yesterday and tried the brunette one and it does work well! I'm kinda wishing I hadn't bought the original one now as I'm afraid it will leave me with white pacthes. :S I have found with the brunette one that it made my hair look quite dull at the roots, not as shiny as the rest, although I admit it still looked way better than it did before.

I've tried the Tresemme foam shampoo but it just didn't work for me :/ :(

  9. I have tried both the James Brown dry shampoos (the white London one and the Scandalous black bottle), as well as the Umberto.

The James Brown dry shampoos left horrid white marks in my hair which I cannot brush out completely and it shows vividly, since I've black hair. The scent's lovely though.

I really like the Umberto one and have already repurchased. I think your bottle was probably a dud, unfortunately, since I've used mine for over 2 months and there's still some left. The scent's fantastic too and I find lingers nicely in my hair.

I really enjoyed this comparison post so hope to see more in the future!

  10. I agree the original batiste stinks and makes the air around you when you spray it really difficult to breathe in!!

If u get a chance please check out my blog :)

  11. I bought the Umberto Giannini product and it was terrible for my hair! After paying that much I was pretty unhappy as well. The first bottle I bought had a leak and was empty the day after I bought it, so I took it back to Boots and swapped it for a new one.

  12. I found the Umberto Giannini lasted me much longer than batiste, and I use it a lot more. I had to switch from batiste cos it leaves so much white powder in my black hair!! But I'm gonna try the one for brown hair cos i did really like it.
Thanks for this, it helped :)

  13. Love this post and the table! I don't think we can get the Umberto Giannin here on Canada, and in my city the Baptiste is a bit hard to find. It's a little too powdery for me. I like Ojon Dry Rub-Out Dry Cleanser for my hair.

  15. I just found out from another blog (Nouveau Cheap) that Suave is coming out with a dry shampoo. I don't know if Suave is available in the UK, but here the range is known for being inexpensive but getting the job done. I am looking forward to trying that one.
